I love you Canon!

Ok, so a while back all of us in the digital filmmaking world wanted to both kiss and kick Canon. They released there 5D Mark II and I was hooked on the video that it shot… almost that is. Besides having a terrible post-unfriendly H.264 video codec it lacked the one thing that all of us in the filmmaking world love… 24 frames per second.

Many of us complained and most of us shot on it anyway, resigning ourselves to the thought that we had to accept 30p in order to get the progressive 1920 x 1080 HD video that it produced gloriously. Yet Canon did was Canon does and listened to the small, feeble cries of those of us in independent film and video.

Introducing the Canon 7D.

Packed with all the wonderful features of the 5D Mark II including 1080p, manual controls (only a recent update), and a good sized LCD, the 7D added variable frame rates. We finally get the 24p that we have been looking for.

Now the 7D doesn’t solve it all. It still has a nasty focusing issue with no auto-focus in manual mode (a topic of disagreement among many of us), the H.264 stays in place and a few other carry overs from the 5D Mark II (rolling shutter aka jell-o cam), but thanks Canon for listening.

The 5D is still better for shooting stills, but the 7D is now going to be the choice for a lot of digital filmmakers.

And the kicker… only 1700.00!

Hurry and get one pre-ordered.
