Creating Your Own Photoshop Brushes

Today I am going to show you a very simple way to turn anyone/anything into a photoshop brush.

Step 1.) Open the image you want to turn into a photoshop brush and crop out all unwanted areas.

Step 2.) Next you will need to convert the image to black and white. When defining a brush anything that is black will be the brush part, and anything that is white will be the negative space.

You can do this next step in two ways:

  1. Go to Image>mode>grayscale
  2. Go to Image>Adjustments>black & white

I prefer the second method because it doesn’t discard the color information.

Step 3.) Next go to Image>Adjustments>Posterize. This will bring up a small screen where you can select as many steps between white and black as you want. For example, selecting “2″ will leave you with just black and white. For this tutorial I used a setting of 4.

Step 4.) Now go to Edit>Define Brush Preset. A box will pop up prompting you to name your brush. Name it and click ok.

Now when you select your brush you will see a new brush in your palette. This gives you the ability to create an image or shape over and over again in any color with little effort. It is great for creating patterns, background, and other fun graphics.
